His mother worked as a maid. His father cleaned restaurants late into the night. Lukanga remembers discovering school lunches, school buses, and library books—and also learning early what responsibility looked like.

Growing Up Fast

In high school, Lukanga’s mother suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed. His father became her caregiver while working longer hours. Lukanga helped where he could, often running on just a few hours of sleep.

School became a refuge. Teachers noticed his determination and his dreams of building something meaningful. While attending the University of New Mexico, he began selling CDs and T-shirts out of his trunk—learning business by doing.

Then loss struck again. His mother passed away. Soon after, his father died of a heart attack while traveling to Uganda to bury her. In his early twenties, Lukanga found himself alone—but not without purpose.

More Than Money

By age 23, Lukanga had earned his MBA. Yet he never saw money as just numbers. To him, spending habits reflect values, wounds, and priorities. This belief shaped his approach to advising clients—many of whom are young, newly successful, and navigating wealth for the first time.

As a little Black girl growing up in the South, Davonne Reaves could never have imagined owning hotels—let alone becoming one of the youngest African American women to co-own multiple hotel properties before turning 40.

That vision became reality in 2020 when Reaves and her former college roommate made history as the youngest African American women to co-own a property within a major hotel chain. She later acquired two additional hotels through the Indiana-based Nassau Investment Group —building a portfolio that now includes co-ownership of hotels and residential real estate totaling $30 million.

Yet, even as her success skyrocketed, she knew she didn’t want to be the only one climbing. “I knew I had to do my part.”

Reaves spent years in the hospitality industry and saw firsthand how commercial real estate—especially hotel ownership—was largely reserved for the wealthy, connected, and already experienced.

“It’s truly an amazing experience and opportunity, but for decades, it’s been out of reach,” says Reaves. “Tapping into this industry changed my financial future and transformed my life. (LOS ANGELES) — Faith and Community Empowerment (FACE) hosted a press conference on Thursday, August 28th to announce their 29th Annual Homeownership Fair.

The 29th Homeownership Fair will be held at the Pilgrim Congregational Church (500 N Garey Ave. Pomona, CA 91767) on Saturday, Sept 13th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm PST.

The press conference was joined by Los Angeles County First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis and Assistant Assessor Dara Smith representing L os Angeles County Assessor Jeff Prang. FACE was also joined by our Collaborating Partners including the LA County Asian American Employees Association (LACAAEA), LA County Chicano Employees Association (LACCEA), and LA County Hispanic Managers Association (LACHMA), along with our lead sponsor First Citizens Bank.

The press conference was opened by FACE’s President & CEO, Hyepin Im, who introduced FACE's 29th Annual Homeownership Fair.

"For the past 24 years, FACE has been connecting resources to the community as well as empowering communities who serve those in need. Over the years, we have helped over 17,000 individuals be on their way to the dream of homeownership. Today, we're excited to announce our 29th Homeownership Fair. It will be in Pomona on September 13th, and we already have over 1,300 registered! Many people give up on homeownership because they think 'I don't have enough income, I don't have enough down payment, my credit score is too low, I'm not rich enough, or I'm not poor enough.' But we have so many partners such as Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, our banking partners like First Citizens, as well as government entities who will be at the fair sharing resources."

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis spoke on the importance of her office's partnership with FACE and promoting the dream of homeownership.

"Building generational wealth is something that we have been advocating for in the First District for many years, for the last 11 years I've been in office. And I'm proud that we're partners with FACE and with all of you... I'm glad to hear about some of the opportunities that are made available. When else do you hear that a substantial amount of a down payment can be brough together by coupling different resources together?"

FACE highlighted the success of FACE Homebuyer Education Client Ellaura Rhapsody who purchased her first home with $251,000 in down payment assistance !

FACE CEO Hyepin Im emphasized the significance of homeownership and how FACE's Homeownership Fair and Homebuyer Education Courses can help people reach the finish line.

"Studies show that if individuals start off their path to homeownership with a HUD approved housing counseling agency such as FACE, their likelihood of going into foreclosure drops by 30%. That is because we are able to provide the education and resources to help people not just become smart buyers but smart homeowners. There is a $380,000 difference in wealth between homeowners and renters... homeownership plays a significant role in wealth. We are hosting this fair to let people know there are resources to help them become homeowners regardless of their situation." - Hyepin Im

Assistant Assessor Dara Smith spoke on behalf of the office of Assessor Jeff Prang and highlighted the significance of their collaboration with FACE in advancing the American Dream of homeownership.

"Assessor Jeff Prang is very proud to support FACE. We've been a partner for several years now... It is so key for FACE to be helping families, especially focusing on underrepresented communities, the AAPI community in particular, to get the tools and confidence to become homeowners."

FACE CEO Hyepin Im expanded on FACE's mission and the goal to promote homeownership, especially for communities of color.

"As an Asian-American, there is this concept of the Model Minority Myth that says Asian Americans are privileged... In past data of major markets of large Asian American populations, you'll see that White homeownership is at 66% and Asian is at 61%. But when you actually disaggregate the data, you'll see Korean and Black homeownership rate is the same at 42%, and there are 7 other API subgroups below... But the bottom line is that we're all in the same boat together and all communities need access to resources that will allow them to become homeowners."

Another successful FACE client Frederick Kim joined the press conference to share his home buying experience. Even with a moderate income he found it difficult to purchase a home. With FACE's help, he was able to purchase a $535,000 2 bed, 2 bath condo in Lakewood with a $6,500 grant and below market interest rate.

"I registered for the Homebuyer Education Class, and I first learned about this process and what I need to prepare for. After that, I got to have a one-on-one counseling session where my housing counselor looked over my personal finances and let me know what would be a right fit for me. She connected me with banks, lenders, and realtors that ultimately catapulted me to getting my home. I've been very blessed through FACE."

Our lead sponsor, First Citizens Bank, spoke on the valuable resources that will be shared at the homeownership fair.

"Who has 20% of a million dollars? Nobody! But the City of Los Angeles has a LIPA and MIPA program. We qualified for MIPA, which is $115,000 in downpayment assistance... and we have a great bank that got us a $20,000 grant."
