(TENNESSEE) Tennessee State Rep. Justin J. Pearson, 30, has officially announced his run for the U.S. Congress, setting his sights on the seat currently held by longtime Rep. Steve Cohen. His announcement arrives at a moment when many voters—across generations—are expressing a desire for renewed leadership and fresh vision.

Pearson, known nationally for his bold advocacy and principled stands, told supporters in Memphis that his campaign is rooted in the everyday realities and aspirations of the 86th District. Speaking to a crowd energized by possibility, he shared a message centered on dignity, economic security, and community well-being.

“Believe in me because I believe you deserve the best… to retire without debt, to live in a home without fear of losing it, and to have access to healthcare regardless of your income. But I also want you to believe not just in me—believe in us.”

A Leader Who Rose by Standing Up

Pearson became a national figure in 2023 as part of the “Tennessee Three,” a trio of state legislators who sparked a wave of civic engagement after being briefly expelled for leading a peaceful protest calling for gun safety measures. Alongside Rep. Justin Jones and Rep. Gloria Johnson, Pearson’s stance ignited conversations about youth leadership, community safety, and the power of moral courage in public office.

His presence in the legislature has also symbolized cultural pride and representation. On the day he was sworn in, Pearson wore a traditional West African dashiki, opening dialogue about tradition, identity, and respect within the Tennessee State House. His willingness to show up authentically has resonated with younger voters and longtime Memphians alike.

A Call for Leadership That Meets the Moment

Pearson says his bid for Congress is driven by conversations he’s had across Memphis—conversations about rising poverty, economic pressure on families, and the need for bold solutions.

He has been vocal about policies that strengthen economic mobility, protect homeowners, increase access to healthcare, and ensure that children and communities are safe.

While Rep. Cohen has served the district for nearly two decades, even some of his supporters acknowledge that the district is ready to consider a new direction.

One Memphian wrote on X,

“Nobody loves Rep. Cohen more than me, but the time has come.”

Why This Moment Matters

Pearson’s candidacy reflects a trend seen across the country: younger leaders, many shaped by today’s economic and social challenges, are stepping forward with urgency and purpose. For Memphis, this race is not just about a political seat—it’s about the kind of future residents want to build.
